How to play Mahjong solitaire
Mahjong solitaire is a calm matching game for one player. The tiles sit in a pile shaped like a picture, and your job is to take them all away, two at a time. You play it right here in your browser.
Step by step
- Look for two tiles with the same picture.
- Both tiles must be free. A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right side is open.
- Tap the first tile, then tap its match. The pair leaves the board.
- Flowers match any flower, and seasons match any season. Every other tile matches only a tile just like it.
- Take away every pair and the board is clear. You win!
Tips
- Start with tiles on top of tall stacks and at the ends of long rows. They free the most tiles underneath.
- If four matching tiles are free, think before you pick. The pair you leave may be the one you need later.
- Stuck? The lamp always shows you a pair that works.
- Made a mistake? Undo puts the last pair back, so you can try another way.
- When no pair is free, shuffle. The tiles left on the board swap places, and you keep playing.
Questions
Is Mahjong solitaire the same as Mahjong?
No. Classic Mahjong is played by four people. Mahjong solitaire uses the same tiles, but you play alone and only match pairs.
Which board should I start with?
Start with Gate. It has only 36 tiles. Wreath and Pagoda are next, and Turtle is the classic board with 144 tiles.
What happens when I run out of moves?
You can shuffle the tiles that are left. You get two shuffles on each board, and you can always start a new board.
Is there a time limit?
No. Take as long as you like.
